We Learn Together is a Service Learning project from the students in Values, Ethics, and Diversity in American Popular Culture, a course in the Communication department at Austin Peay State University.
Students created educational presentations for other students, faculty, and members of their community on diversity topics and issues in America today. The material is a resource for people who want more information about those topics.
We will clarify our terminology for this project with assistance from the Oxford Dictionary of Current English:
We do not indoctrinate, defined as "Make (someone) accept a set of beliefs, without considering alternatives." We educate, defined as "give intellectual or moral instruction; give training in a particular subject." We provide intellectual information on the particular subject of diversity, but we offer the information for individuals to make their own decisions about their responses to the information.
The key to We Learn Together: Discussions in Diversity is that these are the students' voices in the conversation. By lending their voices and information, they become community members educating anyone who visits the website.
The lecture materials and links to each accompanying video lecture/presentation are located on our Lecture Materials page, as well as cited resources from research. Please visit, and hopefully you will find information you can use.
We Learn Together encourages discussion, further research, and opportunities for listening to student voices.
